Leftovers

Soon after moving to our new place in Chicago, I became obsessed with another “organic” Assemblage left behind by the previous tenants. It was an assemblage of various gardening materials and decor. The items had me wondering what type of labor had happened, what kind of history could be found in this assemblage. It felt like a time capsule of previous life. How did these items impact the previous tenant’s experience in this space, what was their relationship to the small environment in the backyard? Did they find meaning in the labor of caring for their landscaping? How did that poor statue lose it’s head, and why leave it there, why not throw it away? Was this a physical manifestation of an intent to repair that was never carried out?
