This exercise was inspired by a photo sent to me of my sister and I when we were very young in front of our house at the time. That and other photographs have caused me to wonder how the physical space you reside in might shape your identity and who you are. In Snoop: What Your Stuff Says About You, Sam Gosling writes about his work with an architect who specializes in designing homes that integrate the personal physiological needs of its occupants. Gosling states “the unique needs we seek to satisfy with our physical spaces are rooted deeply in our past experiences.” Do I have a preference to open front brick porches because of this? I placed the small model of my childhood front porch alongside photo albums and keepsakes to establish the item as a physical embodiment of a memory, a dutiful study of an impactful object in my life, instead of creating an illusion of the real thing.
